The record company era was truly the heyday of the music business. Record labels like Sony, Decca, Warner, and Motown were so successful that they were able to build their own companies, which were used to make their records. Record company executives often had such high personal incomes that they could afford to buy stock in their own companies. They could then move into record labels as companies themselves, or even become independent record companies themselves.

This idea of owning your own record company was a major part of what made the music business so exciting. However, as time went on, record companies like EMI and RCA started to lose money, and they began to look for ways to increase their profits, without the high-priced and risky record labels they had started out as. One of the most successful ones of this new breed was EMI.
