My wife and I were having a conversation the other day and she said, “Why do you get so defensive about your sports authority?” It never occurred to me that I have that problem. It’s a matter of when my ego wants something, I get defensive. But this isn’t about me. I have my own way of getting my way, and I’m not even particularly defensive about that. It’s my perspective that my ego wants to see me as a winner.
It’s not that you get defensive about your ego. In fact, it’s the reverse. You get defensive when your ego wants something different from you. In sports authority, I want you to do X, or have an X-factor in your game, or show your X-factor. Or maybe I want you to be a big time sports authority, which you are. So I get defensive about my ego about those things.
This is the thing about ego. We think we want something from somebody, but the reality is that we always want something else. We always want to be somebody else, and that can be seen in our egos. So while we might be self-aware, we are not really self-aware, at least not fully. We only think we are because we have an ego, but the ego itself does not have any awareness of what it is.
This is why ego can be so destructive, it is just another way of telling yourself, “you’re not good enough.” I don’t think that is helpful. I think that is just another way of telling yourself, “you’re too stupid to be in charge of anything.” So what I want to do is make the self aware so it can help others.
How do you do this? How do you become aware of your self-awareness? I would recommend doing something called “The Life Exercise.” It is a method of training our brain to be aware of the activities of our body and mind. It is also a way to become aware of our ego. By doing this we can become aware of the emotions, thoughts, and actions of our ego and become more aware of who we really are.
