The problem with this is that it can be the most frustrating thing in the world to be evaluated against others. It’s like being in a public speaking competition. There’s no way to stop and think through the entire process of speaking and trying to give a solid presentation. All you can do is focus on the last moment of the speech, and that moment can be a disaster.
Well, a lot of people in competitive sports do what they do because they are judged against others. In fact, most people in competitive sports do it in order to prove themselves against others. Its not always the case though. The very act of trying to outdo others is a way to prove and prove themselves. So many people in competitive sports (and the rest of society) have a hard time understanding that it’s not just a game.
To say that competitive sports are about the last moments of success is to say that the whole competition is about who can show up for the last minute, and if that shows up, then it’s a win. But to suggest that the last moment of a speech is important is to say that the whole speech is about who showed up to the last second. It could be that a speech is about the last second of a speech.
The only reason why sports can be competitive, and why we have to make sure that people understand that, is because people are on the same side of a battle. We don’t want to kill each other for the sake of killing each other. In fact, we don’t want to kill each other because we don’t want the other side to win.
