When I first heard that the U.S. was going to become a “city sporting t shirt”, I was shocked. If you think about the number of shirts sold in the U.S, most of them are in the U.S. and most of them aren’t at all. Most of them are made out of recycled materials, and the only time you can get to the store and find your shirt is when you’re feeling “unhealthy.
Of course, there are exceptions. For example, my favorite shirt is made of recycled tires. The next closest shirt is made from natural rubber. And the third closest shirt is made from soy. Of course, that’s not even close.
I remember when I first saw a shirt made from soy I thought, “That was probably made in Japan and only sold at U.S. department stores.” A few years ago there was an article in the New Yorker about a guy named Mike who was selling soy-based shirts at the Whole Foods Market. Since then I’ve seen some more shirts made from soy, and I’m sure there are more out there.
In fact, there are a ton of soy-based athletes out there. A few years ago, a young girl from my church asked me if she could go to a high school gymnasium and play softball. She was so good that she won the state softball championship.
This makes me think about the growing number of companies that are looking to add more “food-based” products to their stores. If you can find a local grocery store or even a regional supermarket that has a selection of “sexy” sports shirts and shorts, you can put a good price on “healthy” foods, and make money for the company.
